👉 Medical Trauma experienced as a result of medical procedures, illnesses, and hospital stays can have lasting effects.

According to PAINSCALE in an article titled: What to Do When Medical Trauma Interferes With Current Medical Care, the author shares the following:

"Medical trauma is an emotional response to a serious event involving medical care. For example, medical trauma can develop after an unpleasant treatment, painful procedure, or hospitalization in the intensive care unit. Medical trauma can also occur when an error is made, such as when the wrong medication is prescribed or when a surgical mistake leads to a complication."

Sometimes, experiencing Medical Trauma or PTSD from a medically related event can be especially problematic because it can make us not want to go back for a follow-up, not trust taking medications, or even not agree to a procedure.

Here is an overview of 6 steps to take when trauma interferes with your care:

1. Consider appointment times

2. Involve a family member/friend

3. Be honest with your medical team

4. Try breathing or relaxation techniques

5. Be willing to ask for help (there are a variety of therapeutic methods to help)

6. Seek a new doctor if necessary.
